I’ve seen quite a few technologies develop, but none with this level of risk. AGI is significantly higher risk than nuclear weapons, in my opinion. Super smart humans have trouble imagining something vastly smarter than themselves.

I agree it is nuanced but increasingly it’s how people seem to be aligning themselves on this topic. I myself have moved from “you can be both” to on balance worried (mostly about the shorter-term consequences you mention) in the course of writing my book about these stories
