I am literally the system. I have the power to choose who gets interviews in our department. So at least at Waterloo, it does matter what I find interesting. (caveat all of this with the fact that I only have *influence*, and not dictatorial power)

I think it's more often the other way: you have 1 interesting idea, which lets you write n papers. It is indeed not easy to tell what is interesting before doing the research. But it may be possible to tell when you can write a publishable but not interesting paper beforehand.

No disagreement here! There is certainly a skill in getting papers accepted. And having a lot of papers doesn't mean it's bad work. But it's easy to get fixated on numbers and writing papers just because one can. It may lead to a PhD with nothing interesting in hindsight.

Hinton’s Move to Google: Toronto’s Coursera Deal Fallout

Seems relevant to bring this up today: Hinton was originally pushed towards Google because Toronto was trying to stiff him on a profit sharing deal for a Coursera course. Well, I think he more than made up the money during his time at Google.
