Trying out o1 multimodal — an old test of mine it still trips on: Identifying a face frame clamp, a tool used in cabinetry, given four close-up product photos showing multiple angles

LLM comparison: which models solved the contrived problem?
By

Contrived problem, I know, but: ChatGPT 4o, o1-mini, and Claude 3.5 Sonnet all get this wrong — 0 out of 3 each ChatGPT o1 gets it right 3 out of 3

LLM numeric reasoning and inference behavior

Can’t speak to Claude but in general models are just trained to do this — doesn’t need multi-stage inference etc. You see it with a lot of LLMs if you ask if 9.11 or 9.9 is greater. Common to get variations of “9.11, because […] so actually it’s 9.9.”

Tokenization vs arithmetic errors in LLMs
By

Less in the “profound” category but inspired by ppl saying this about “David Mayer” which seems to just be a string filter In general I think arithmetic and indexing failures are over-attributed to tokenization; e.g. digit tokenization is more consistent than most realize

No LLM behavior is so complex, profound, or absurd that someone, somewhere, will not suggest “tokenization issue” as the full explanation for why it happens.

Workaround for ChatGPT string-filtering in prompts
By

This seems to work because ChatGPT checks for the exact string “David Mayer” — any trick that avoids that string in both input and output, like asking it to say “DavidMayer” or “d4v1d m4y3r” or “David Meyer” (with two e’s), should work:
