But patching holes in lack of resources for education, medical care, journalism, etc with "genAI" is like treating morning sickness with thalidomide. Damaging, and especially damaging to another entity the person receiving the treatment cares deeply about.

This is correct. The stock photo companies are not officially licensing Copyright to the AI companies (Shutterstock → OpenAI) because that would be admitting that copyright is necessary, which AI companies want to deny. The licensing is, for example, high-quality data.

Is there a middle ground in Copyright debate? If loopholes are made wider for AI, I don't see how © holds. Some want to abolish it; many claim it's about "balancing of interest" — but I don't see how that could ever work. Seems like a slippery slope into free-for-all. Thoughts?

There's a continuous scale between "random creation" "inspiration" "derivative" "forgery". The burden is on the author to navigate that legally. Some of those are fine but it always depends on the use.
