When we see well-meaning legislation to scan for 'harmful content', undermine encryption, monitor comms in the name of child safety etc., we are derelict/deeply naive if we don't acknowledge and contend with the grim reality of how these laws will most likely be used in practice.

When I talk to people outside the US, they're rarely aware of how bad its gotten. I believe bc state level authoritarianism seems rarely subject to international media coverage. In any event, there's now a proposal to *jail teachers/librarians who possess 'banned books'* !!!
