How can knowing something hurt you? Information can sometimes cause harm (think of the annoyance of seeing spoilers as a tiny example). This paper on information hazards was prescient about many of the issues we face today. So, a on some of the hazards of knowledge… 1/

Environmental Impact Assessments Required Before AI Deployment
By
–
Yes. Can we require environmental impact assessments before any AI design can go public? Where companies demonstrate long term protection of water etc? Where people say “companies won’t like that” or “policy makers are too slow..” Those answers don’t work anymore.

LLM Mental Health Safety: Testing Before Public Release Required
By
–
Any LLM interacting with humans re their mental health should be tested for a long time before being released to the general public. If they cause harm, they shouldn’t be released. It’s not that complex. It’s about society saying we prioritize care, for planet and people, first.

AI Ethics Demands Environmental Impact Assessments First
By
–
So any AI Ethics folks of any stipe or background, please recognize this amazing reporting for whatit is – a clarion call to prioritize planet and people FIRST in the design of AI. Note insider say “ban” etc. But urging wide scale environmental impact assessments – YES.

LLMs Water Consumption and Energy Sustainability Concerns Criticized
By
–
The world NEEDS water. Where non LLM oriented AI is helping the planet (and it is in many ways), yes – let’s use it. Where the ecosystem surrounding LLMs including ye olde chip logic “justified” by saying “nuclear fusion will solve our energy needs” is again obfuscation .

AI Water Consumption Opacity Contradicts Environmental Claims
By
–
The “we need to use AI to save the planet” while knowingly using so much water AND keeping the specifics about how much water is being used in water scarce areas where it’s well documented aquifers all over the US and planet are being depleted rapidly NOW is obfuscation.

AI Water Usage Transparency Gap Raises Responsibility Questions
By
–
I’m not trying to condemn DC owners re their lack of reporting, but want to make a point related to your excellent reporting: Nobody can say ANY AI is “responsible” or “for good” where so much water is being used for AI/LLMs while so little data is available on actual use.

AI Training Data Lawsuits Won’t Significantly Slow Development
By
–
Lawsuits over AI training data won't halt AI development, or even slow it much. This is for many reasons: open source models already released, a lack of consistent laws (training data isn't protected in Japan) and the fact that many companies (Adobe) are now using licensed data.

Data Centers Water Usage Reporting Lacks Regulation and Business Incentives
By
–
Orgs like @UptimeInstitute have done excellent reporting on how only 39% of data centers (2022 report) report on water usage. The logic for this, from DC owners is “there’s no regulation or business incentive to report” said water usage. Again, I don’t u destined.

Data Transparency on Planet Resources Should Not Be Hidden
By
–
I believe the AP reported on another state in the US where something similar happened and again, I don’t understand. If the logic is the resources or our planet that need protection along with accurate data around their availability, hiding that info for any reason is criminal.
