AI Companies Buying Media Outlets to Replace Advertising Models
By
–
OpenAI and others could pay millions / billions in licensing fees, or just buy the media outlets for less and scrap the dying advertising models that are barely sustaining journalism. Maybe AI saves journalism in an ironic twist. But then we have to trust these companies to

Legal Training Arguments: AI Learning vs Human Learning Comparison
By
–
The legal arguments between “training” and “learning” will be intriguing. I could definitely see a path forward in which the courts allow the training / learning because the AI companies succeed at convincing the judge(s) it’s not really different from humans. But the companies

AI Learning from Copyrighted Material: Legal Arguments and Implications
By
–
Also not a lawyer, but I’ll be fascinated to see legal arguments for 1) below. The AI learns from copyrighted material like humans (except it can learn more and do it faster), and synthesizes that information to create outputs, also like humans. Should that be illegal?

NYT Lawsuit Against OpenAI Microsoft Over Copyright Training Data
By

Biological systems have energy costs per-computation and this didn't "eliminate" all goals other than pure desire for genetic fitness, because the thousand shards of desire weren't extraneous, they were the whole implementation. But even leaving that aside – how much more

DMCA Safe Harbor Implications for AI-Generated Content Sales
By
–
They are hosting the files as well. The text interface is like a search engine so there's precedent there. Furthermore, Safe Harbor provisions don't even apply in this case because MJ is selling the outputs — and couldn't comply with the rest of the DMCA even if they wanted to.

AI Companies Liability for Infringing Generated Outputs
By
–
1) not necessary here because the outputs alone are infringing. 2) See caselaw about hosting infringing images. If there is doubt about the legality (and MJ claiming Fair Use is intentional choice that takes on the risk), it doesn't absolve companies of responsibility.

Getty Lawsuits Force AI Image Providers Toward Legal Settlements
By
–
Past lawsuits by Getty and settled by Google Images suggests significant concessions will be necessary by providers in order for them to continue operations. Since you also agree it's infringement, it's indeed a question how much the providers are liable.
