WSJ obtained confidential financials from both OpenAI and Anthropic ahead of their expected IPOs later this year. The core tension: revenue is exploding, but training costs are exploding faster. OpenAI projects $121 billion in compute spending by 2028, resulting in $85 billion in losses that year alone, even after nearly doubling revenue. Strip out training costs and both companies are near profitability now; add them back and OpenAI doesn't break even until the 2030s. Anthropic expects to get there sooner. Inference costs still eat over half of revenue at both labs, though that share is declining.

The desire to improve Google Translate by 1-3%, a tiny percentage, gave birth to the entire modern AI industry and trillions in market cap, outside of Google. BLEU score on MT seemed cool when I worked on it, but it punched waaaay above its weight as a guiding star.

Human not AI stock analysis All the major information providers such as FactSet and the rest now have these automated forms of stock information. They basically give you the same headlines you find all over the place. They don’t give you much more than the headline, and I’ve found they even miss the most important headlines on a daily or weekly basis concerning a given stock. The details about a company tend to be the same clumps of publicly-available financial data, without any sense of whether it means anything, without any context relative to other companies. The bolt-on AI stuff is basically turning out to be not very valuable. If you want to get good stock market analysis, stick with people not automatically-generated garbage.

IMHO this is a decoy, in order to distract away from the fact that OpenAI’s economics don’t make any sense.
