It's also worth mentioning that OpenAI has a lot to lose here. Its foundation models are the standard right now (like 90% of the people I talk to use GPT-4). But its text embedding model, ada-002, isn't actually the best one available. That one comes out of Hong Kong University.

– yea put sparse and dense models in the same plot with the # params. good job – i'm sure you know the size of palm-2 and gpt-4. – fwiw, t5 is still one of the best LM models out there. it started way earlier than 2021. –
