So, pre-1999 when RHT went public? Because as soon as there was adoption in sufficient quantity there has always been business.

Elastic executives accountability for strategic licensing decisions
By
–
PS by your calculation, every single exec at Elastic should be fired, along with their board. Because you're arguing (implicitly) that but for their license change, they'd have continued to grow at ~124%. That is 100% a fireable offense at the c-level to get it that wrong….

Open Source Scaling: When Reach Doesn’t Equal Contribution
By
–
Which better reach/scale does NOT translate into "contributing more." So it's a downward spiral that leaves the code creator worse off (and, ultimately, everyone worse off). But…community! Sure, point to PG, K8s, and Linux. Not many other big examples to use, unfortunately.

Software regulation impact on cloud market concentration and revenue
By
–
Of course one could say, "Think of how much faster you'd grow if the sw were completely unfettered!" Grow adoption, maybe. But revenue? No way. In such a world, the cloud takes all (or most). Simply has much better scale/reach than anyone else.

Elastic’s License Change Accelerates Cloud Partnerships
By
–
Which says as much about the base they're growing off than it does about the license. Regardless, I'm not here to defend Elastic's decision. I can say that it doesn't seem to have slowed us and it has *absolutely* accelerated our partnership with the clouds.

Board-Level Decision Impact on Public Company Profitability Strategy

They're nowhere near profitability. Trust me: this was a board-level decision and wasn't made lightly. It certainly wasn't made "so we can get a bit more money." Life as a public company doesn't work that way.

HashiCorp License Change: Business Necessity Behind OSS Decisions
By
–
I've worked for OSS companies for 20+ years. No one happily adopts a non-OSI approved license. It's a board-level decision, made after long deliberation. If Hashi is doing it, it's not bc "we want to be richer." It's bc of a serious risk to their ability to continue to fund sw dev

Cloud Provider Pressure on HashiCorp: Behind-the-Scenes Industry Tensions
By

And for those that have been in my DMs, challenging any pressure from clouds, well, I'm sorry, but there's been plenty behind the scenes. I worked for the largest cloud provider. I have stories (which, no, I can't and won't share). Hashi didn't do this unprovoked.

Open Source Business Challenges: Cloud Vendors Impact
By
–
Some don't like to press too hard on the reality of running an open source business, but it's hard and made 100X more so by some (mostly cloud vendors). You can shoot the messenger (in this case, @HashiCorp
), but they're simply trying to preserve their ability to keep building -
Monetizing AI: The Hard Reality for Builders

I don't love the BSL (I know, I know…) but agree 100,000% with the "haven't tried to make $$" comment. I've spent my entire career trying to do it and it's HARD.
