Not at all – I am a sama fan! (Well, I don't know him personally, but he seems amazing.) I just think governance is complex, and that he didn't seem the best person to deliver on OpenAI's charter.

Of course, there's one aspect of OpenAI's mission I can fully get behind…

OpenAI governance challenges and funding: balancing mission with resources

Of course, if they didn't do these things, maybe OpenAI wouldn't have raised much money at all, and would be a lame duck in trying to achieve their mission. Like I said: governance is hard.

OpenAI’s Governance Mistakes: VC Leadership and Profit-Driven Incentives

I do think OpenAI made many governance mistakes. Having someone from the VC world run it, and having a fintech expert as the CTO, and then hiring people on the basis their compensation would be tied to profits, are all gonna make things even harder!

OpenAI Board Addresses AI Safety and Profit-Driven Control Concerns
By

I don't know the answers to these questions. But I'm glad the OpenAI board is thinking about them. My view is that previously OpenAI was on a path to reducing safety, because I think having the power of AI controlled by a profit-chasing entity is the worst of all possible worlds

Governance Challenges: Balancing Societal Outcomes Against Profit Incentives

Also, governance is really, really hard. I've advised many big company boards over many years, and every board I've dealt with has taken their obligations seriously. Trying to maximize societal outcomes over $$$ outcomes is *really* hard to do in our capitalist system.

OpenAI Board Refocuses on Mission Despite Disagreement

My support of the OpenAI board is confusing a lot of people (understandably!) so let me clarify: I don't personally believe in OpenAI's mission. But I still support the board's decision to re-focus on it, because I think that's what boards should do.

Board Governance and Company Mission Alignment at OpenAI

I don't support OpenAI's mission personally. But I support the idea that a board should maintain the company mission.

Board governance and ethical responsibility in corporate charters

Yes that's fair – although if I were a board member I wouldn't go against the company charter in the hope that a court might later decide it was actually OK to do so. In fact I wouldn't join a board where I disagreed with the charter.

Theory: Altman fired for hiding a conscious AI from OpenAI
By

Il y a une théorie que Sam Altman aurait été viré parce que OpenAI aurait trouver un moyen d’avoir une IA consciente / AGI et qu’il ne l’a pas dis au board.

Cette thèse revient souvent en plus chez de gros acteurs de la tech mais venez on souffle et on redevient sérieux 2 sc.. https://t.co/MHReYiT3CzThere is a theory that Sam Altman was fired because OpenAI found a way to have a conscious AI / AGI and he did not tell the board. This thesis often comes up among big tech players but come on, let's breathe and get serious for 2 seconds..
