Rembrandt-2 Face Generation Model Shows Promising Early Results

Rembrandt-2, the next iteration to Rembrandt-1, is a powerful face image generation model, which is still under training, and here are some results with 15% of the total training steps. The results look awesome! I will share the source code for both Rembrandt-1 and Rembrandt-2 on Github, alongside the trained weights, as this is an open model. Please note that, this is not the full trained model and the images have artifacts, it's just 15% of the total training steps, so this is not a right time to judge. Rem2 is still undertraining.

Having a model like Gemma 4, which is perfectly adequate for everyday use in many cases, runs locally, is free, and secure, still feels unreal. We have a very good AI that costs nothing, uses hardly any power, and is always there. I think that's simply fantastic. The only problem is: 99% of people have never even heard of it.

US labs abandon open weights, Chinese labs key

The US frontier labs have all walked away from open weights. They continue to occasionally release excellent open models (Gemma 4, etc), but they are smaller models that are not competitive with their closed weights models. So all eyes are on Chinese AI labs for open models.

Lots of open questions: is RSI indeed happening at the Big Three labs? How long can the exponential of LLM ability gain last? How much do Chinese models rely on distillation, and can they keep pace given chip constraints? Will there continue to be frontier open weights models?
