What is clear is that it is a better model in terms of benchmarks and based on the feedback I've been seeing for days from insiders I trust who have been testing it. Bring it on. That said, it is also a more expensive model.

AI Models Reaching Excellence in Code, Struggling Elsewhere
By
–
It's not "meh", and it's not plateauing. I think we're just reaching a point where, for the things the models were already good at (i.e. code), they are becoming absolutely excellent, and it's hard to tell the difference between releases. And for things that they're not yet good

GPT Model Performance Benchmarking and Marginal Improvements Analysis
By
–
A benchmark that captures the evolution of models in real office work well is OpenAI's own GDPval, and notice that here the model improves only marginally over the previous one, but the thing is that it really even in WINS achieves less than GPT 5.4. Honestly, I think there are

OpenAI announces GPT-5.5: smarter, faster AI model
By

Hello GPT-5.5!
— Romain Huet (@romainhuet) 23 avril 2026
Our best model yet is here. It’s smarter, faster, and gets more done.
I had the chance to capture first reactions from developers building with it: it writes better code, understands more complex tasks, and keeps going.

Smaller Token Count Improves Agentic Programming Model Performance

Once again, in agentic programming itself the same pattern. The model achieves better performance using a smaller number of tokens.

GPT 5.5 Achieves Superior Performance with Reduced Token Consumption
By
–
Something worth celebrating is the efficiency gains in token usage! Here GPT 5.5 pushes the frontier and makes its consumption cheaper by achieving (in the aggregated Artificial Analysis benchmark) the same performance using the medium level of GPT 5.5 (22M tokens) as what GPT
