Fear that AI writing may prioritize popularity over quality
By
–
Well, that's the hope. My (short-term) fear is if it proves that outside of a tiny subpopulation there's no demand for good writing or ability to discern it; the AI outputs go to where there's max demand, and sparkling generic deepities outcompete thinking.

Language Models Need Acoustic Models to Match Reality
By
–
The original language models were only half of a speech recognizer, whose function was to produce coherent text. The other half was the acoustic model, whose function was to ensure the text corresponded to reality. We forget the latter at our peril.

Human Text Generation Differs from GPT Sequential Token Processing
By
–
When humans generate text (articles, posts, papers, etc) they spend very different amount of time per token, create intermediate work, make edits, etc. Very different from GPTs that just go chunk chunk chunk. But there seem to be enough puzzle pieces out and about to remedy.

LLMs Make Unique Mistakes Unlike Human Reasoning

ChatGPT lacks time to think unlike humans
By
–
The deepest unintuitive disconnect w.r.t. psychology of ChatGPT is that it doesn't get "time to think". It has a small, fixed amount of thought for each output token. A bit like human forced to speak very fast. Asking them to produce more text is giving them more time to think.

Language Models Understanding Meaning Beyond Sequence Generation
By
–
gentle reminder: takes like these are thoughtful, interesting, and may be a consequence of emitting the next words in a sequence. but saying there is no understanding of meaning is quite a stretch.
