Software capabilities supervision and emergence in AI systems

If I had to guess, I'd say that a lot of supervision has gone into the software-adjacent capabilities, as that's a very promising commercial opportunity. Most of the other things I try feel emergent? Maybe? I hope this will be clearer as other systems are released. (end)

If I hit some pocket of supervision, but I think it's all emergent behaviour, I'll come away with an incorrect mental model about what else the system can do. I'll think, well if it can do this task, it can do this other task. 5

Siri, Alexa etc have a bunch of specific functionality, and language is just the UI. It's like typing into one of those old adventure games. If the game wants you to catch the cat with the flypaper or whatever, you can't crouch down and slow blink to lure it over instead. 3

ChatGPT’s opacity regarding data sources and supervision

The fallback function of Siri, Alexa etc is to search Google or Wikipedia. When that happens, it's pretty obvious. But with ChatGPT, it's extremely murky (to me at least) — so much so that I don't even know how important the explicit supervision really is. 4

Distinguishing Emergent vs Supervised Behaviors in ChatGPT

Some of the things ChatGPT can do are emergent behaviours, picked up from the language or code modelling. Other things it can do have been specifically taught to it. Is there some speculative list somewhere about what tasks were supervised? 1

Sorry… I meant to poke at the SD community with this example that was trending, as a sort of ‘backward progress’ of the state of text-to-image community. We went from “elegant simplicity of creative concept art” (left) → “needlessly complex prompts objectifying women” (right).
