Diaspora (1997) is excellent zoom-out sci fi. Impressive that it was written 26 years ago — feels particularly worth reading now.

One understated factor is mental health. Academics are incredibly competitive. I've seen multiple people torn apart for years after, when they didn't get an award but others (comparable or less qualified) did. Silly? Yes. Real? Also yes. A broader problem in academia. 6/n
