So charge for it, whether directly to users or through corporate sponsorships. I've seen this movie before in open source: relying on the charity of others to keep tech running doesn't work. Even Mozilla figured out a way to pay for its existence (ie antitrust shield for Google)

I know it's now unfashionable to like X, and it certainly has issues, but I've tried the alternatives and…they're not better. Maybe someday they will be, but I'd prefer to fix X than to try to recreate it somewhere else. Just my $.02
