And so, relative to a non-Google hire, your ex-Googlers will be at positions within your company which their level of competence may not yet have, ahem, strictly speaking been fully demonstrated yet. The memeplex will have prepared them well for what they need to do next.

"What's an example of default consensus decisions?" OK, so you're hiring ex-Googlers, right? You know what their payscale looks like. It is higher than yours. You will *systematically* uplevel them both to justify more $ and to make up for the sacrifice they take joining you.

And so when the Google memeplex looks around locally and sees a lack of the comforts of home, which the memeplex is very capable of advocating for persuasively, sometimes it should be listened to and sometimes it needs to be treated like a prion that kills all hosts but Google.

The way that Google operates is both extremely path dependent and also successful in the context of happening to be one of the most powerful, well-resourced, unassailable businesses that has ever been conceived of in reality or fiction, attached to a magic money printer.

The culture that is Google embeds a memeplex which sees organizations that do not operate as Google operates, and interprets this deviance as damage. Some people who previously worked at Google are extremely steeped in this culture and less than reflective of this fact.

I have had the opportunity to work with many people who previously worked at Google, and enjoy the vast majority of those interactions. But I will say a thing that must be said, for the benefit of people who will otherwise learn it the hard way:

And a challenge of working there is "How much of my brainsweat/care/identity is entangled with playing the game that is Google and Getting Good at Googling? And how much is everything else?" Neither extreme of spectrum is optimal for most interesting values systems.
