yeah π it's not as bad as it sounds, e.g. using the example in the notebook, training an SVM on ~10K 1536D embeddings is ~1 second. Sometimes it's possible to precompute. And sometimes it's just not worth it, all depends on setting / application.

Cloud Value Beyond Cost Savings: Agility and Innovation

"We thought cloud was all about cost savings, but that metric was wrong. We need to put a value on the agility and innovation cloud brings, not just dollars and cents," argues @DavidLinthicum

ML Research Community Validation Culture and Workshop Dynamics
By

And that scratches most of the "research validation" itch for me (don't lie, we all have it). My feeling is that other areas of ML don't have this type of community. More of a rat race, trying to get noticed. Focused workshops help alleviate this, but they can be infrequent 4/n

Research Community Loneliness: Building Networks Post-PhD
By
–
There's great communities for jr. researchers to get involved & alleviate this loneliness (eg @ml_collective @forai_ml @AiEleuther
) but may be harder for someone post-PhD, since they're supposed to be "independent." Is research community loneliness a problem? Is it fixable? 5/5 -
Why Academics Seek Recognition: Understanding Research Motivation
By

They want more papers, more citations, to be one of these "leaders." I totally get the desire (and feel it myself, to a lesser extent), but I've been trying to understand *why* there's a need to impress random strangers. Why does one care what these people think? 2/n

Differential Privacy Community: Tight-knit Research Subcommunity
By
–
I'm deeply appreciative of the differential privacy community. While it is simultaneously tight-knit yet welcoming, I have a smaller subcommunity within (~5-10ppl?). We know most of what each other have been up to, and there's a feeling of mutual respect for each others work. 3/n

Research Community Loneliness: Citation Gaps and Recognition Issues
By

Friend was telling me about their "research community loneliness". Do others feel this? Thoughts invited. They said it feels like no one notices or cares about their work. Not many cite them. People instead follow "leaders" in the area (even when work is of dubious quality). 1/n
