The most important thing when someone visits your institution: go to their talk. Imagine how depressing it is to have no one show up, when they traveled to get there. Also, how would they feel about that institution and its members? Academia is full of silent grudges.

I can see this perspective, but ironically it seems like a negative to me. Incentivizes pushing grad students out the door, whether they feel they're ready to go or not. I'm really thankful my advisor let me stay for 6 years. What side do other folks here fall on?

arXiv as Definitive Version for Research Publication

For my own work, I view the arXiv version as the definitive version, no matter what conference or journal it's in. No weird page limits, templates, etc., everything is just the way I intend it. It may also be a carry-over from other fields, where proceedings are often closed.
