If you have a solid strategy and a small amount of compute, you can go pretty far. If you have huge clusters of GPUs and no strategy, your only achievement will be burning capital.

Solving Mazes Through Pattern Recognition Rather Than Trial-and-Error
By
–
Having a young son has made me look at a lot of mazes lately, and one thing I've noticed is that it's usually possible to solve any maze in ~2s via global-view pattern recognition, without having to go through a trial-and-error path search process. Like many search problems, 2D

Correlation vs Causation: Key to Robust Generalization
By
–
If your learning algorithm is based on correlation rather than causation, it will struggle with overfitting. To understand something is to identify its minimal sufficient causal mechanisms. Parsimony isn't just elegance, it's generalization robustness.

Best I can tell o3-mini is not going to be doing search. So don't expect the same capabilities as the o3 research preview.

OpenAI’s Confusing Model Naming: LLM vs Test-Time Search
By
–
OpenAI releases under the *same name* models that work completely differently — some where most of the lifting is done by an LLM, others where most of the lifting is in test-time CoT search. This can be confusing. But the multi-min latency is how you can tell them apart.
