Prediction: all closed AI model providers will stop selling APIs in the next 2-3 years. Only open models will be available via APIs. Why? For an open model service, the value prop is clear…it's hard to build a scalable service to access the model and the model is commodity.

OpenAI ChatGPT subscription revenue model and competitive strategies
By

They make money from chatgpt subscriptions which would grow if they get more visibility/talent/AI progress. Again take a look at the deepseek/meta playbook.

Open-sourcing AI beats API monetization for long-term success
By
–
Yes and I suspect they would be much more successful in the long-run doing this than keeping it behind an API. Making a few hundred million $ now from it via API doesn’t move the needle compared to the 10x more usage/visibility/goodwill/talent they could get by open-sourcing it

By

IMO, if GPT 4.5 was released as an open-source base model (that everyone can distill), it would be the most impactful release of the year. As an API, it's meh…

Open-sourcing AI from the inside strategy

We don’t manage to make them open-source enough from the outside (IMO they could be #1 in AI) so we’re trying to do it from the inside now haha
