After reading the @nytimes lawsuit against @OpenAI and @Microsoft
, I find my sympathies more with OpenAI and Microsoft than with the NYT. The suit:
(1) Claims, among other things, that OpenAI and Microsoft used millions of copyrighted NYT articles to train their models

Typewriter Doomers and AI Regulation: Historical Lessons
By
–
I shudder to think what a poorer, less informed world we would live in if the Typewriter Doomers had convinced governments to pass laws to ensure there're only "safe" typewriters. I feel this is similar to what's at stake today in the fight to stop bad laws that stifle AI.

AI Doomsday Scenarios Unlikely Senate Forum Discussion
By
–
How likely are AI doomsday scenarios? I spoke at the US Senate AI Insight forum organized by Senators Chuck Schumer (D-NY), Martin Heinrich (D-NM), Mike Rounds (R-SD), and Todd Young (R-IN), and explained why I think they're very unlikely. AI systems aligned with RLHF already

AI Advances Climate Modeling for Stratospheric Aerosol Injection Research
By
–
Had lunch with a group of distinguished climate scientists to discuss applying AI to climate modeling to advance the science of stratospheric aerosol injection (SAI) for cooling Earth. AI can help figure out if this is actually a good idea (which we do not currently know).

Hypothetical AI Harms Versus Current Realized Harms Imbalance
By
–
In AI, the ratio of attention on hypothetical, future, forms of harm to actual, current, realized forms of harm seems out of whack. Many of the hypothetical forms of harm, like AI "taking over", are based on highly questionable hypotheses about what technology that does not

AI advancing climate science through stratospheric aerosol injection research
By
–
I hope AI can make a difference to climate change, by advancing the science underlying the possibility of cooling Earth via stratospheric aerosol injection (SAI). To be clear, I don't think SAI is a good idea. But I also don't think it's a bad idea. We just don't know! We need
