That's the fascinating thing about Mastodon though: sure, having everyone join the same couple of suggested servers would improve the onboarding UX no end… but it would make those services prohibitively expensive to operate – and there are no ads and no VCs funding it

That's a clever thing about how they've built Mastodon: it makes no difference at all to the vast majority of users if one instance became mainstream vs hundreds I'm running my own unique instance with just a single user – me – and all of the features I care about work just fine
