There are a bunch of options as far as I can tell, but I've not tried any out yet Mastodon itself is pretty heavy – PostgreSQL and Ruby and Redis and a massive number of Sidekiq queues

Mastodon Explained: Decentralized Blogs and Feed Subscriptions
By
–
I'm finding Mastodon a lot easier to understand having I've realized that it's just blogs. Everyone gets a little blog, on their own server or someone else's. Following someone is pretty much subscribing to their feed. You can even roll your own implementation from scratch.

Mastodon’s Decentralized Design: Promoting Instance Diversity Over Centralization
By
–
The interesting thing about that is they don't WANT to get huge – http://
mastodon.social is run by the Mastodon org as a reference implementation, but they're very invested in getting people to use other instances instead, hence the directory on https://

Mastodon maturity addresses decentralized social network challenges effectively

The reason I'm optimistic about Mastodon is that they very clearly understand the challenges involved in running software this way, and have spent the past 6 years plucking away at them It's not perfect, but I think it's now Good Enough, especially for this unique moment

Local Server Infrastructure Challenges in Decentralized Networks

Thousand tiny servers bloom: Mastodon financial sustainability model
By
–
That's another reason why I'm optimistic: may a thousand tiny servers bloom Mastodon users seem to get that they should open their wallets – there are no ads so it's pretty clear that people need to help financially support the servers they are using – or volunteer time, or both

Decentralized Moderation: Distributed Responsibility Across Thousands
By
–
I really do think that's one of its strengths though: there are genuinely thousands of servers, so the moderation responsibility is shared by a very wide set of volunteers

Server Administration Responsibility in Decentralized Technology

Running a server for other people is definitely not a responsibility to be taken lightly! This post really influenced my thinking about that https://
