I know that, and I've seen it happen many times before, but maybe this time it's different? We are a savvy bunch. We just got burned, bad, by Elon. We want somewhere nice to talk to each other, and we are willing to pay a reasonable price to get it.

I'm finding Mastodon a lot easier to understand having I've realized that it's just blogs. Everyone gets a little blog, on their own server or someone else's. Following someone is pretty much subscribing to their feed. You can even roll your own implementation from scratch.

mastodon.social is run by the Mastodon org as a reference implementation, but they're very invested in getting people to use other instances instead, hence the directory on https://
