Intelligence is similarity + compositionality. Transformers' similarity is dot product of embeddings and their compositionality is attention, both still very primitive.

I think arXiv is great for both types of work: no reason not to! The challenge is that we currently attach more rewards to work that is also in a conference: in hiring, plus more visibility, citations, etc. Should we reward one type of work much more than the other?
