Genuinely curious: is there anyone who actually teaches an undergrad ML class at a university who chooses to present it in a manner that Grady suggests? Though he prescribes it, I am not aware of any course he has taught, and would be interested to see the syllabus & lectures

Agreed. This is really cool if you want to make pretty pictures (though, e.g., the Golden Gate Bridge pics look somewhat artifact-y). But if you *need* something to be accurate, all bets are off. I think there'll be a mismatch between user expectations and what the feature does.
