Version 4 shipped a few days ago with some nice improvements – so it's getting better It doesn't have a team of thousands of engineers and designers behind it like Twitter used to though, so we may need to be a little more patient with it

That's the fascinating thing about Mastodon though: sure, having everyone join the same couple of suggested servers would improve the onboarding UX no end… but it would make those services prohibitively expensive to operate – and there are no ads and no VCs funding it

You can't – and any time someone tries to build a centralized search engine large portions of the Mastodon community politely but firmly ask them not to – it's a cultural thing there I'm working towards being able to search my own stuff plus stuff that's come through my timeline
