Posted 6th annual review of my Jan 1st, 2018, predictions on autonomous driving cars (+electric+flying), robotics and AI, and human spaceflight. The hype around them all meant that people were expecting large scale deployments in unrealistic timeframes. rodneybroooks dot com

LLMs Impact on AI and Linguistics Debates
By
–
http://
rodneybrooks.com/blog post covering some of my opening keynote on Nov 28th for MIT's Generative AI Week is now up. This is one of the topics I talked about–the impact of the existence of LLMs on three long running debates in AI & linguistics. I have this handle at bsky social. -
Cruise autonomous vehicle experiences delays, navigation issues in light weather
By
–
@cruise tonight, 20min wait, 5min stuck, new car alloced. VERY light fog/rain–6months ago would have shut down-fine tonight. As always screen: "next stop: ". Map: drop on another street. Kept driving extra 1/2 block. Walked home, as always. Not UBER level service.

Rodney Brooks on Missy Cummings and Self-Driving Car Safety Criticism
By

A piece on my good friend @missy_cummings (suspended on X–you get to guess at why), F-18 fighter pilot, former MIT and Duke professor, and critic of self driving car companies' analyses of their own safety:

Cruise autonomous vehicle performance: progress and remaining issues
By

Good @cruise ride home on empty dark streets. I only complain when car does idiotic things for which a human driver would be sanctioned by passenger, nearby humans, or officials. Still too much of that for @cruise and others. [Most recent SF accident not so; not @cruise error.]

LLMs Through Magical Realism Lens: Magic Perception
By

LLMs seen through the lens of magical realism. This way of thinking seems an alternative to, but allied view with, my own description of them as being perceived as indistinguishable from magic. These two authors are very very distinguished researchers.

Tom Hanks Warns About AI Deepfake Video of Himself

We knew this was coming soon… Tom Hanks says there is an AI video of him selling a dental plan, that he has nothing to do with. Of course, we could choose to believe the converse…. Oh, oh.

Cruise’s Driverless Cars in Austin Not Ready for Scale Deployment
By
–
20+ @cruise driverless in Austin, TX. [Thanks to Tandy Trower & @garymarcus
] This system is not ready for deployment at scale, and it is not a good business model to be subjecting people going about their lives to disruptive experiments that piss them off. -
Academic perspective on fundamental limitations of large language models
By
–
@rao2z is an academic leader in AI and here presents a short coherent argument on the fundamental limitations of LLMs. [[Note that all technologies have limitations and it is magical thinking (in my seven deadly sins sense) to believe that LLMs will not.]] https://

Cruise autonomous vehicle progress in San Francisco neighborhoods
By

Progress; empty night streets, zero cars. @cruise now. SF NE has longer blocks E/W than N/S. 4 stop signs at every junction. Max speed E/W 25mph. Two weeks ago 17 N/S. Tonight 22. Better drop off closer to destination, but still not on my block. I'm too timid yet for traffic.
