On a positive note, I'm living my dream job as a *permanent* professor of practice. I research, teach, do service, write grants, run a lab, sole supervise PhDs and do all of the things TT do (I just teach one more course per year than my colleagues.)

This is exactly why I decided to hop off that track while having my kid… Another complexity is that here in Canada, new parents have 9 months off. It is great, but as the breastfeeding mom, I really had to take that time off. I get a time extension on my grant (1/2)

Lab Leadership Roles for Graduate Student Development

Started doing this too, recently! Also have appointed lab "chair" positions for each grad student, eg. education chair who runs reading groups and social activity chair who organizes outings, and have some time at the end of each meeting for announcements from all the chairs.
