Good point! Super interesting to see ChatGPT become the new benchmark. It'll be challenging but important to find the right language moving forward when talking about new conversational systems – in a way that doesn't conflate those aspiring to be ChatGPT with ChatGPT equivalents

ChatGPT’s Unique Position: Why University AI Claims Need Skepticism
By
–
So any claims that a university has something akin to ChatGPT should be treated with heavy skepticism. Not all AI conversational chatbots are ChatGPTs. ChatGPT is in a class of its own, built on enormous data, compute & money.

Universities Cannot Replicate ChatGPT Due to Computational and Financial Constraints
By
–
As researchers have told me, it will be basically impossible for universities (both Chinese & American) to replicate ChatGPT. The data demands and computational costs are just too high. Universities don't have that kind of compute infrastructure in place or that much money.

MOSS: Not a True Chinese ChatGPT Equivalent Despite Comparisons
By

Per the Fudan University researchers who built MOSS, it's not a true Chinese equivalent to ChatGPT. It's trained on a fraction of the data and performs poorly in Chinese. Interesting to see them still compare it to ChatGPT though. The hype is real. https://

But generative AI isn’t designed do that, Acemoglu said. “ChatGPT’s claim to fame is that it sounds more like a human. The more human-like it is, the more it can be substituted in for human tasks,” he said.

Generative AI’s uncertain long-term impact on employment and work
By

There’s still a big question mark as well around the long-term impact that generative AI could have on jobs and the future of work. @DrDaronAcemoglu told me that while no one really knows what will happen, he’s worried so far by what he has seen.

Generative AI: Data Privacy and Intellectual Property Concerns
By

Of course, even in these instances, the use of generative AI should be measured. Serious questions surround the data that these tools are trained on—what it includes & if it was obtained with consent. Such tools can also regurgitate that data, risking privacy & IP violations.
